Total volume organic waste produced and treated

     In 2024, National Chiayi University (NCYU) treated a total of 90.872 metric tons of organic waste, representing 99.83% of the total 91.027 tons generated.

The organic waste mainly consisted of used cooking oil, food waste, paper waste, and fallen branches/leaves.  Due to NCYU’s extensive greenery and broad campus area, fallen leaves accounted for the second largest portion, while paper waste remained the primary contributor.  All organic waste was properly collected and treated through recycling and composting:

•    Food waste was sent to the Chiayi City Environmental Protection Bureau for composting and resource recovery.

•    Fallen leaves and pruned branches were shredded and composted for landscaping.

•    Paper waste was collected by certified recycling contractors.

•    Used cooking oil was recycled by authorized vendors.

   These efforts demonstrate NCYU’s strong commitment to achieving near-complete treatment (99.83%) of all organic waste, advancing SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production through continuous improvement in waste reduction and circular management.  In 2025, NCYU plans to further reduce paper-based waste through digital document management and promote leaf composting workshops for students and staff.
