National Chiayi University (NCYU) has implemented a series of integrated initiatives to reduce private vehicle use and promote sustainable, low-carbon transportation. These actions combine policy restrictions, infrastructure improvement, and behavioral change programs, resulting in a comprehensive campus-wide transition toward green mobility. Key initiatives include:
Electric Shuttle Bus Service: Free solar-powered electric shuttle buses operate between campuses, providing convenient and zero-emission transportation for students and staff.
Electric Vehicle Charging Stations: Solar-powered charging points for electric cars and motorcycles encourage the adoption of zero-emission vehicles.
YouBike 2.0 System: Installed on campus in collaboration with the Chiayi City Government to provide an accessible bike-sharing option for students and staff.
Electric Shuttle Cars: Small electric vehicles are provided for inter-facility transport within the campus.
Ride-Sharing and Carpooling Programs: Faculty and students organize shared rides through dedicated online groups, and the university coordinates shared-taxi services to the High-Speed Rail Station with nearby institutions such as Wu Feng University of Science and Technology.
Parking Management Policies: Reduced and limited parking zones, increased parking fees, and strict control of motorcycle entry to discourage fuel-vehicle use.
Awareness Campaigns and World Car-Free Day Initiatives: In 2024, NCYU donated 30 recycled bicycles to international students in support of World Car-Free Day, promoting sustainable commuting and resource reuse while enhancing mobility access for overseas students.
These initiatives collectively reduce the need for private fuel vehicles and foster a culture of sustainable commuting on campus. NCYU’s ongoing efforts directly support SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by improving accessibility, reducing carbon emissions, and strengthening community engagement in green transportation.
