National Chiayi University (NCYU) has established a comprehensive sustainability governance framework led by the Environmental Protection and Safety Management Center (EPSMC) and the Office of Sustainability and Social Responsibility (OSSR). Both units coordinate university-wide efforts toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UI GreenMetric indicators through integrated policies, campus-wide participation, and cross-sector collaboration. The university’s sustainability vision is to cultivate globally minded sustainable citizens and to build an eco-friendly, resilient, and socially engaged green campus. NCYU’s sustainability strategy emphasizes three pillars—environmental integrity, social inclusion, and responsible governance—embedded across teaching, research, operations, and community outreach. Policies are formulated under the guidance of the Mid-term University Development Plan and the Higher Education Sprout Project, ensuring continuous progress in climate action, energy transition, and sustainable education.
Implementation programs are carried out through multiple action lines:
Green Campus Development: ISO 50001-certified energy management system, installation of solar, wind, and hydrogen demonstration facilities, six Green Building certifications, and a campus-wide smart water resource management and rainwater retention network.
Circular and Responsible Resource Use: 99.5% green procurement rate, wastewater reuse at the Animal Science Experimental Farm, and recycling of organic residues into biofertilizer.
Social Responsibility & Community Partnership: Over ten active USR and USR Hub projects linking sustainable agriculture, elderly health innovation, rural revitalization, and cultural preservation, enabling students to apply knowledge to real-world sustainability issues.
Education for Sustainability: Development of interdisciplinary SDG-oriented curricula and microcredit programs such as “Discovery Chiayi,” integrating environmental education, social innovation, and local cultural experience.
International Engagement: Global partnerships with institutions in Japan, Malaysia, and Southeast Asia through the Trilateral Sustainable Campus Forum and New Southbound programs, promoting cross-cultural sustainability learning.
Through these actions, NCYU’s achievements include a ranking rise to 187th globally in the 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, a 17.8% renewable energy usage rate, and continuous enhancement of environmental resilience and social impact. The university’s sustainability report, compiled and verified annually by the OSSR and EPSMC, serves as both a transparent communication tool for stakeholders and a management mechanism for self-assessment and continuous improvement—embodying NCYU’s commitment to “Sustainability in Action, Responsibility in Practice.”
