NCYU’s sustainable transportation policy aligns with Taiwan’s 2050 Net-Zero Emissions roadmap and national low-carbon campus initiatives. National Chiayi University integrates sustainability, technology, and inclusivity into all aspects of its transportation system, creating a measurable impact across multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through a combination of low-carbon mobility, digital management, and people-oriented design, NCYU’s transportation initiatives advance environmental protection, health, accessibility, and education. Key actions include solar-powered electric shuttle buses with real-time arrival displays, the YouBike 2.0 bike-sharing system with online availability tracking, iChiayi mobile app integration for public transport, and a License Plate Recognition (LPR) system for data-driven vehicle monitoring. Pedestrian routes totaling 11.4 kilometers across four campuses feature barrier-free ramps, guiding blocks, and smart LED lighting, ensuring safety and inclusiveness. In collaboration with the National Land Management Agency, NCYU also established a model “Human-Centered Street Zone” that enhances walkability and sustainability education.
These integrated transportation programs collectively contribute to 14 SDGs, including:
SDG 3: Health and well-being through walking and cycling.
SDG 4: Education on sustainable urban design and mobility.
SDG 5: Gender and mobility equity.
SDG 7: Clean and affordable solar-powered energy for transport.
SDG 8: Green employment in transport system operation and ICT maintenance.
SDG 9: Smart infrastructure and ICT-based transport monitoring.
SDG 10: Accessibility and barrier-free campus design.
SDG 11: Sustainable and safe mobility within and beyond campus.
SDG 12: Bicycle reuse and responsible resource management.
SDG 13: Climate action through emission reduction.
SDG 14: Water ecosystem protection via eco-friendly landscaping.
SDG 15: Biodiversity enhancement through green corridors.
SDG 16: Transparent governance and safety through ICT data systems.
SDG 17: Partnerships with government, local universities, and communities.
Through these efforts, NCYU demonstrates a very high impact (supporting 14 SDGs) in promoting an intelligent, inclusive, and climate-resilient transportation system that benefits both campus users and the surrounding community. NCYU continues to expand its low-carbon mobility initiatives and data-driven smart campus systems to further support sustainable urban development goals. These collective efforts position NCYU as a national model for smart and sustainable campus mobility, demonstrating innovation, inclusivity, and climate action in higher education.
