Elements of Green Building Implementation as Reflected in all buildings
National Chiayi University (NCYU) demonstrates a comprehensive commitment to green building principles through both new construction and renovation projects. All campus buildings follow the Taiwan EEWH Green Building Evaluation System, integrating key elements such as greening, water retention, energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, and indoor environmental quality.
1. Greening and Water Retention: All buildings maintain at least 15% green coverage with permeable paving and retention designs to enhance natural infiltration and reduce surface runoff.
2. Energy Efficiency: Building shells incorporate external shading and balcony structures for thermal insulation. The university implements ISO 50001-certified Energy Management Systems (EMS), high-efficiency HVAC units, LED lighting, and natural daylighting to improve overall energy performance.
3. Water Conservation: Dual-flush toilets, rainwater harvesting, and recycled water systems are standard features used for landscape irrigation and toilet flushing.
4. Waste Management and Sewage Improvement: Campus policies ensure all domestic drainage is connected to municipal sewage networks, while waste recycling and separation minimize landfill waste. Animal-resistant bins also maintain hygiene.
5. Indoor Environmental Quality: Natural ventilation, eco-friendly low-VOC materials, and minimalist interior design create healthy and comfortable indoor spaces.
6. Green Building Certifications: Buildings such as the Science and Engineering Hall, Multi-Purpose Instruction Building, and College of Management Buildings A & B have received Green Building Mark Certificates, while the Sinmin and Minxiong campuses are certified under ISO 50001 Energy Management.
Through these comprehensive measures, NCYU ensures that sustainability principles are embedded in every stage of its building lifecycle—from design and construction to operation and maintenance. These initiatives support SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), advancing the university’s vision of a green and energy-resilient campus.
