Green jobs are defined according to the International Labour Organization (ILO) as employment that contributes to preserving or restoring environmental quality across sectors such as agriculture, forestry, renewable energy, and environmental management. National Chiayi University (NCYU) has nurtured a strong foundation for green employment across its diverse academic departments related to sustainability, including Aquatic Biosciences, Biochemical Technology, Biological Resources, Civil and Water Resources Engineering, Mechanical and Energy Engineering, Wood-Based Materials and Design, Landscape Architecture, Forestry and Natural Resources, Plant Medicine, Horticulture, Agronomy, Agricultural Biotechnology, and Technology Management. Over the past three years, the total number of graduates from these green-related programs reached 880 in 2022, 922 in 2023, and 867 in 2024. According to the NCYU Graduate Employment Survey, 391, 323, and 224 graduates respectively entered green job sectors such as sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, green materials, environmental engineering, and circular economy industries. NCYU actively supports students’ transition into green careers through curriculum integration, field training, and industry partnerships. Representative cases include the Agronomy alumnus Hung-Tse Liu, who applied organic agriculture expertise in Papua New Guinea and presented at the 2024 Organic World Congress, and the Department of Wood-Based Materials and Design, which established sustainable building material collaborations with local enterprises to promote carbon-neutral production. These examples illustrate NCYU’s continuous efforts in developing green competencies and tracking graduates’ employment outcomes in sustainable sectors, aligning with SDG 4.4 (enhancing youth technical and vocational skills) and SDG 8.6 (facilitating youth transition into employment and training).
